Introduction

With over 60 years of illustrious history, the Sydney Film Festival is one of the biggest and longest running international film events on the Sydney calendar each June. Each year the festival brings the best new films from around the world to audiences in Australia. As well as brand new features from over 50 countries, SFF screen documentaries, short films and retrospectives. The festival hosts a number of awards to recognise excellence in filmmaking, including the Lexus Australia Short Film Fellowship, Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films, (which are Academy Award eligible), the Documentary Australia Foundation Award and the International Official Competition, which celebrates 'courageous and audacious filmmaking'.

The festival’s current director is Nashen Moodley, and during his first two years at the helm, the Festival grew significantly. In 2013, with the event celebrating its 60th anniversary year, attendances increased to 143,000.Apart from their extensive film program, the festival has many special events, a talks program, a popular opening night gala party and a festival hub bar featuring performances and exhibitions. Each the Sydney Film Festival also takes a selection of films on the road to regional Australia for its Traveling Film Festival initiative.
