Oberhausen International Film Festival is the second largest film festival in Germany, it is also known as one of the best short film festival in the world. In 1954, Hilmar Hoffmann established this film festival, only at the time, it was named "West German Educational Film Festival". In 1959, the name of the fest was changed into West Germany Short Film Festival, and in 1991, it was finally set to the Oberhausen International Film Festival. A lot of famous filmmakers from Germany and all over the world have all started with an award at this festival.
Each year, the Oberhausen International Film Festival would get over 6000 entries from all over the world, in which 5000 of them were publicly shown during screenings, and of which, about 1100 were selected by the jury. During the time of the official selection, with the jury’s proficiency, they have gained their status in the field of world’s short film festivals. The festivals includes featured films, narrative films, documentaries, and animations. The highest achievement award being the Oberhausen City Award.
Moreover, Oberhausen had a large short film database from the past years, and during the time of the fest, they are available for people who are interested to rent. In 2011, Oberhausen has invited Chinese filmmakers in China to submit their films, and include their films into the Oberhausen’s database to serve more and more people. In 2014, a Chinese animated Film--The Summer Insect--was nominated in the Oberhausen Film Festival Animated film category.
