Introduction
Mar del Plata International Film Festival is the oldest Latin American Film Festival and the only one with “A” status. The Festival established itself as a vital exhibition of the development and exchange of the film industry and audiovisual arts. The FIAPF honors this and the festival is today a must for filmmakers, actors, producers, distributors and film lovers in Latin America.
The first festival was held from 8 to March 14, 1954. It was a first Non-Competitive Cinematographic Exhibition which films was highlighted as a spectacle. Devised by the Secretary of Information and Press, Raul Alejandro Apold, the festival sought to give strong support to the film industry and bring world cinema to the Argentine public.
Mar del Plata was chosen as venue for this film festival as the ultimate tourist destination. There, 18 countries were represented by the 52 feature and 49 short films that were screened.
The Festival became the mirror image of the world’s cinematographic tendencies and the annual meeting for audiences, films and film makers.
