International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) offers a high quality line-up of carefully selected fiction and documentary feature films, short films and media art. The festival's focus is on recent work by talented new filmmakers. However, within the four sections the Festival presents, there is also room for retrospectives and themed programmes. IFFR actively supports new and adventurous filmmaking talent through its co-production market CineMart, its Hubert Bals Fund,Rotterdam Lab and other industry activities.
IFFR is convinced that cinema (and particularly independent cinema) is able to expand audiences’ horizons, break through social barriers and bring about positive social change. Independent films and filmmakers are a great force for good in society. IFFR supports these films & filmmakers and celebrates the impact they have on the world.
As an international film festival, we represent the strength and impact of independent film, filmmakers and film-related art. We stimulate, coach, finance, distribute and support filmmakers through the Hubert Bals Fund (HBF), our annual co-production market (CineMart) and the many forms of training provided to filmmakers through the RotterdamLab.
By organising the annual festival and other events throughout the year, we create a platform for makers to present their (life’s) work to broad, diverse audiences. In doing so, we accept challenges head-on. Hotly debated and challenging, our programming tackles issues and tensions of contemporary social relevance.
IFFR is one of the largest audience and industry-driven film festivals in the world. During twelve festival days, hundreds of filmmakers and other artists present their work to a large audience (2017: 314.000 admissions and 2.298 film professionals). The festival's Official Selection includes some 252 feature films and 225 short films out of 50 countries. It aims to organise and stimulate film-related activities in Rotterdam.
The 46th edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam took place from Wednesday 25 January till Sunday 5 February 2017.
The 47th IFFR will be from Wednesday 24 January till Sunday 4 February 2018 (film submissions are open from July 2017)
Famously, seventeen people attended the opening night of the first Film International Rotterdam on 28 June 1972. An initiative of the Rotterdam Arts Foundation, Film International (later: International Film Festival Rotterdam) showcased films purchased for distribution to the newly established circuit of art house cinemas in the Netherlands. A driving force, famous figurehead and inspirational director until his early death in 1988, Hubert Bals gave the festival its solid reputation of commitment to and active support of independent cinema as well as of a welcoming meeting place for filmmakers, audiences, film professionals and film critics. Under the subsequent directorships of Anne Head (1989), Marco Müller (1990-1991), Emile Fallaux (1992-1996), Simon Field (1996-2004), Sandra den Hamer (2000-2007), Rutger Wolfson (2008-2015) and Bero Beyer (2015 - Present) IFFR grew to become one of the largest audience and industry-driven film festivals in the world, while maintaining its focus on innovative filmmaking by talented newcomers and established auteurs as well as on presenting cutting edge media art.
